La perle des mots ou syllabes, sans aucun sens en elles memes,
employees pour prolonger ou orner une melodie. La voix humaine
ayant peu a peu supplante l’orgue en usage au Grand Palais, on a
cherche, par l’adjonction de consonnes les plus aptes, parfois renforcees
ou doubles a imiter le son de l’orgue, qui a devant completait
les chants. Et le celebre chantre du Palais, Jean Koukouzelis
(XIIe s.), devenue moine au Mont-Athos, y a introduit cette innovation
dans Part de chanter les «Kratimata», qui, du fait qu’ils provenaient
du Palais «sacre», furent propages et conserves jusqu’a
nos jours.
