Growth and survival of wild mammals are influenced by the climatic and
nutritional conditions that individuals experience during their early development.
Recent findings have shown that early conditions also have consequences for
subsequent survival in humans. The present study was designed to further examine
these findings in a Greek population. Exact dates of birth and death were obtained
from governmental population registries of four major cities for 544,101 (M:
293,566; F:260,535) individuals who died between 2003 and 2004. Males
demonstrated significantly lower life expectancy, compared to females [72,3573 vs.
78,5964 (pO.OOl)]. Analyses of variance incorporating Bonferroni adjustments were
used to perform pairwise comparisons between mean age at death (Dage) by yearly
quarter of birth (Q). Results showed that DAge for individuals bom in the first quarter
(Qi) of the year was significantly greater [Qi=75.85; Q2=75.83; Q3=74.13; Q4=73.91
(pO.OOl)]. This model was mainly attributed to male Dage distribution [Q(=73.1;
Q2=72.78; Q3=71.05; Q4=71.16 (pO.OOl)]. Although female DAge distribution
demonstrated a similar trend (Qi=79.00; Q2=79.15; Q3=77.63; Q4=77.18), no
significant differences were detected between different quarters (p>0.05). This may
be due to the markedly lower number of females used in the study. In conclusion, our
results suggest that the season of birth affects life expectancy in the Greek
population, possibly due to factors that arise in utero or early in infancy.
