The multifaceted benefits of physical activity (PA) for children’s physical, mental and socioemotional healthy development and the pivotal role of physical education and school sport are well acknowledged (Bailey et al., 2009; Pate et al., 2006; Poitras et al., 2016; Society of Health and Physical Education, 2016). However, over the past century, there has been a rise and fall of attention to the different facets of PA outcomes due to reasons that range from cultural and epidemiological trends to methodological advancements in research areas critical to PA advocacy. © 2018 Romain Meeusen, Sabine Schaefer, Phillip Tomporowski and Richard Bailey.
