Abstract
In this chapter, the capabilities of Earth observation (EO) for use in frost quantification and assessment are discussed. First, a description of frost concepts and classification is presented. This is followed by a discussion on the use and potentials of frost analysis. Then, the suitability of existing methods for frost quantification, forecasting and early warning systems (FEWS), and assessment are reviewed. An examination of the strategies for using remotely sensed information in frost analysis is subsequently performed. This review clearly showed that EO technology is a promising avenue for use in frost quantification and assessment. Moreover, further exploration of the remote-sensing potential may lead to improving significantly our hazard management and disaster mitigation capabilities. Addressing the main challenges concerning the use of EO technology in frost analysis and assessment relies on the continuously improving spatial and temporal resolution of the new satellite systems, as well as the increasing operational capabilities of the new satellite systems. © 2018 by Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.
