The fatigue crack growth behaviour of pre-corroded aluminum alloy has been investigated analytically. For this purpose the fatigue crack growth LTSM-F model has been implemented and upgraded to account for the local material properties of the pre-corroded material ahead of the crack tip. In the model the local fracture behaviour at the crack tip of the corroded alloy is governed by the local fracture toughness of the material. The analytical results obtained show good correlation with fatigue crack growth experiments under irregular aircraft service spectra from the literature and demonstrate the significance to consider the degradation of local material properties of structural members including corroded areas. © Springer Science+Business Media B.V. 2009.

Kermanidis, A. T.; Pantelakis, S. G. (2010)The LTSM-F crack growth model is implemented in the present work for the assessment of crack growth and remaining fatigue life of 2024 aluminium alloy with different microstructure. The effect of microstructure in the crack ... -
Fatigue and fracture behavior of pearlitic Grade 900A steel used in railway applications
Christodoulou P.I., Kermanidis A.T., Haidemenopoulos G.N. (2016)In overloaded railway networks, rail surface defects developed under rolling contact fatigue (RCF) if left untreated, may propagate to the bulk of the rail and become critical for its structural integrity. To avoid critical ... -
Rolling contact fatigue cracking in rails subjected to in-service loading
Haidemenopoulos G.N., Sarafoglou P.I., Christopoulos P., Zervaki A.D. (2016)Rolling contact fatigue (RCF) is one of the most important failure mechanisms in rails with significant cost- and safety-related implications on the operation of railway systems. In this work, a metallurgical analysis of ...
