Drawing on various theoretical and methodological approaches, many scholars have over the years investigated the factors underlying economic performance. Yet, findings are often contradictory and inconclusive. The paper sheds light on a number of unsettled questions concerning economic potential, using primary data from an international survey of expert opinion. Issues examined include the significance attached to explanatory factors in terms of their influence to economic performance, the combination of policies expected to advance economic potential and an evaluation of the ability of key theoretical and methodological approaches to explore growth performance. The results have important implications for theory and policy. © The Author 2010. Published by Oxford University Press on behalf of the Cambridge Political Economy Society. All rights reserved.en
