Abstract

The fragment of a stele (Nr. I), an acquisition of the Metaxas Collection in Heraklion, continues the Inscr. Cret. IV, 184, a treaty between Gortyn and Gaudos. This fragment preserves less than the half of the whole breadth of the stele, a fact that makes the proposed completions doubtful; nevertheless it presents some interesting details about the conditions of this treaty, which is practically the only source of Gaudian history: among others, the two cities agree to use the services of a πρόδικος for the settlement of the differences between their citizens; the πρεί- γιστος known from the first fragment of the stele, is now proved to be a Gortynian. The new fragment suggests that the Gaudians, although under the political domination and economic exploitation of Gortyn, a fact already known, must have had a greater degree of independence and national existance than it was supposed by scholars. Twelve other inscriptions presented here (Nrs. 4-15) are almost the totality of the unpublished material of the Haghios Nikolaos Museum; ten of them are funeral stelae, another a rather obscure proxenic or honorary decree and the last a fragment of a decree between Latians and Hierapytnians. Of the last two inscriptions (Nrs. 2-3), the first is a funeral stele of the Rethymnon Museum and the second a pipeline of the Heraklion Museum with a sealing containing the name of the manufacturer.
