The relation between infections and autoimmune diseases has been extensively investigated. Multiple studies suggest a causal relation between these two entities with molecular mimicry, hyperstimulation and dysregulation of the immune system as plausible mechanisms. The recent pandemic with a new virus, i.e., SARS-CoV-2, has resulted in numerous studies addressing the potential of this virus to induce autoimmunity and, eventually, autoimmune disease. In addition, it has also revealed that pre-existing auto-immunity (auto-Abs neutralizing type I IFNs) could cause life-threatening disease. Therefore, the topic of the 15th Dresden Symposium on Autoantibodies was focused on autoimmunity in the SARS-CoV-2 era. This report is a collection and distillation of the topics presented at this meeting. © 2021 The Author(s)

IL-10-producing regulatory B cells (B10 cells), IL-17 + T cells and autoantibodies in systemic sclerosis
Mavropoulos A., Liaskos C., Simopoulou T., Bogdanos D.P., Sakkas L.I. (2017)We aimed to analyze IL-10 + Breg (B10) cells, found to be reduced in systemic sclerosis (SSc), in relation to SSc-specific autoAbs and IL-17 + and IFNγ + T cells in SSc. Peripheral blood B10 cells from 26 patients with SSc ... -
Increased incidence of anti-LKM autoantibodies in a consecutive cohort of hepatitis C patients from central Greece

(2002)Objectives In Greece, there are insufficient data regarding the presence of non-organ and liver-related autoantibodies in hepatitis C patients. This study in a consecutive cohort of 39 such patients from central Greece ... -
Polyclonal hypergammaglobulinemia and high smooth-muscle autoantibody titers with specificity against filamentous actin: consider visceral leishmaniasis, not just autoimmune hepatitis
Makaritsis, K. P.; Gatselis, N. K.; Ioannou, M.; Petinaki, E.; Dalekos, G. N. (2009)Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) remains a public health problem in most countries bordering the Mediterranean basin. Its diagnosis is challenging and often delayed, as the main clinical picture is often indistinguishable from ...
