One hundred and twenty-one clinical isolates of Acinetobacter baumannii recovered from the intensive care units (ICUs) of nine tertiary-care hospitals in Athens, Greece were studied in order to determine whether the increasing appearance of resistant acinetobacters is due to the spread of epidemic strains. The majority of the isolates exhibited resistance to ampicillin-sulbactam, and the most common antibiotic resistance profiles comprised resistance to nine and eight of the 11 potentially active antibiotics tested, respectively. Pulsed-field gel electrophoresis showed that 68% of the isolates, recovered from all ICUs, belonged to two clonal groups, indicating inter-hospital dissemination of multiresistant A. baumannii in our region.en
