Abstract
Au prix d’efforts assidus et de recherches patientes PEmpire byzantin
et sa civilisation ont ete rehabilitee dans Pensemble de PHistoire
universelle. Neanmoins, bien des aspects de sa complexe physionomie
restent encore a elucider, aspects de detail comme aspects generaux.
Des theories et des appreciations, dues d’ailleurs a des ecrivains de
marque, tendent a orienter la recherche vers des voies fausses. On
souligne tout particulierement les chapitres que M. Claude Cahen vient
de consacrer a Byzance dans le tome III de VHistoire generate des
civilisations, publiee sous la direction de Maurice Crouzet (Paris,
I955)· B’articulation de la matiere comme les lignes generales et les
idees-maitresses appellent des reserves tres graves. Da civilisation
byzantine y est pour ainsi dire presentee en marge de la civilisation de
POrient islamique. Cette faqon de voir et des parallelismes plus que
douteux risquent de deformer aux yeux d’un public peu competent
auquel s’adresse VHistoire generate des civilisations, la vraie figure de
PEmpire byzantin et le caractere essentiel de sa civilisation.
Partant de ces considerations generales, l’auteur de cet article
apporte certaines precisions sur le probleme de la place qu’occupe Byzance
entre POrient et POccident. Apres avoir note le sens peu defini
du terme Orient, il s’attache, en premier lieu, a elucider la « theorie
byzantine». De Panalyse de quelques textes caracteristiques il resulte
que les Byzantins, se sentaient completement etrangers vis-a-vis de
leurs voisins orientaux, Perses, Arabes ou Turcs. Ils consideraient
leurs propres moeurs et leur civilisation incompatibles avec la civilisation
et les moeurs des Sassanides ou de PIslam. Par contre, malgre
leur egocentrisme, malgre les dissensions qui ont separe les deux parties
de PEmpire romain, les Grecs du Moyen age se consideraient lies
d’une etroite parente avec le monde chretien d’Occident. Celui-ci comme ceux-la avaient ete les successeurs du meme Empire qu’a regenere
la meme foi chretienne; ils avaient herite de la meme culture.
Aussi leurs civilisations etaient-elles des soeurs germaines. La defense
de ce patrimoine incombait done a eux comme une dette commune.
Venant ensuite au probleme Orient ou Occident 9, Pauteur soutient
que non point les elements exterieurs, mais seule l’anatomie des
institutions politiques et sociales, ainsi que Petude des origines de la
vie intellectuelle et spirituelle, nous aideraient a aboutir a des appreciations
objectives. Aussi s’efforce-t-il de mettre en relief les traits saillants
de la vie publique et sociale, de la culture et de la civilisation
des Byzantins. Sous cet angle precis, sont examines dans cet article
la theorie byzantine de PEtat et du pouvoir, Pinfluence du Droit sur
la vie publique et privee, la structure de la societe, la famille, le droit
de la propriete, la place de la femme etc. Des paragraphes speciaux
sont consacres a Pinstruction et la culture, a la pensee et ses origines,
a la production litteraire, ecclesiastique et profane, savante et populate,
enfin aux origines et au caractere de Part byzantin.
Les conclusions auxquelles Pauteur aboutit sont les suivantes:
i. Les grandes civilisations ne se developpent pas en vase clos; elles
re^oivent des elements etrangers et exercent, a leur tour, des influences
sur d’autres civilisations ; 2. L’Empire byzantin et la civilisation
byzantine sont nes de la rencontre de divers facteurs, materiels et
historiques. En consequence, ils ont regu des elements grecs, romains,
orientaux. Ces derniers viennent pour la plupart du temps par le canal
du syncretisme greco - romain. Ainsi que le remarquait Norman Baynes,
ils ne constituent pas les caracteristiques essentielles du monde
byzantin; 3. L’analyse et, pour ainsi dire, Panatomie des differents
facteurs de la vie publique montrent que, a Byzance, Etat et societe
sont regis par certains principes fondamentaux, par des traditions,
institutions politiques et administratives, institutions sociales, par certaines
regies de droit qui ont leur origine a la tradition greco - romaine;
4. Tout particulierement, la vie intellectuelle et spirituelle de
Byzance est dominee par deux facteurs primordiaux: le christianisme
et l’hellenisme. L’influence de ceux-ci contribua a former un humanisme
byzantin qui associe la pensee et la culture grecques a Pideal
chretien.
D’une fagon generale, de par ses origines, par ses tendances ideologiques,
par ses manieres d’etre et ses visions metaphysiques, la vie
publique et la civilisation des Byzantins — nettement opposees aux
civilisations asiatiques et au monde « barbare » — appartiennent a la grande experience qu’introduisit dans ttiistoire de THumanite la predominance
greco - romaine dans la region mediterraneenne. Etat par
excellence mediterraneen, Byzance poursuit le syncretisme mediterraneen.
Elle vient par la en un contact intime avec le monde chretien
d’Occident et avec les civilisations de la Renaissance europeenne. Non
sans raison, Arnold Toynbee, dans sa classification des cultures de
Thomme, concidere la civilisation orthodoxe et celle de l’Occident
medieval comme des civilisations soeurs, descendantes de l’hellenique.
Bien plus: Byzance, grace a son attachement aux traditions du passe,
elabore deja certains traits essentiels, certaines manieres de penser et
de sentir, certaines visions de la vie sur lesquels sera plus tard basee
la communaute intellectuelle et spirituelle de l’Europe.
