Abstract

A. TREATY BETWEEN TELOS AND RHODOS A fragmentary stele found on the acropolis of Telos bears the beginning of a decree of the synedroi of Telos making a treaty with Rhodos. The terms of this treaty ( as far as they are preserved ) are very close to those of the one between Rhodos and Hierapytna (Inscr. Cret. Ill p. 31 - 38) but of a shorter form. From a combined examination of the letter type with the historical circumstances the inscription is dated very soon after 300 B.C. Despite the fact that this is apparently a treaty between two equal states, it is obvious that by accepting its terms Telos is being entering under the immediate supervision of Rhodos accepting to follow the same attitude with the then prospering state in world affairs. B. CATALOGUE OF PYTHIASTAI This is the third catalogue of its kind to be found on the island of Telos sharing several names with the two others previously known (IG XII 3,34 and 35). This is an evidence that all three catalogues are closely interrelated in time, but, still more, that this office was held by members of a restricted number of familiers, whose social status is made obvious by the construction of a large number of the names of its members, beginning by Άριστο-( and in one case by Τιμο-). In a small closed society like the one was Telos it is natural that all the well established families were tightly knitted together by mariage between their members. Thus from the names known by those three catalogues and some more telian inscriptions (IG XII 3,33, 40 and 45 and Άρχ. Έφ. 1922,46) we were able to reconstruct the stemma of three interrelated families. Line 5 of the inscription provides us for the first time with the complete form πυθάρξαντες, which is met with also in IG XII, 3, 34 (fine 2 ), where (poorly preserved) it has been wrongly restitued to [πρ]οά[ξαντε]ς.
