Abstract
Bei dem Ort Tsopani Rachi, ungefahr 4 km nord-nordwestlich von Paliokastro
/Pylos, wurde bei Ausgrabungen des Griechisch-Archaologischen Dienstes in
den Jahren 1962-1965 ein Tymbos aus hellenistischer Zeit entdeekt. Er enthielt
fiinf Grabstatten und ebensoviele Brandstatten. Unter den mehreren Hundert
Gegenstanden, die die Graber und Brandstatten zutage treten liessen, befinden
sich drei gleicherweise durch Schonheit wie Seltenheit hervorragende Skyphoi aus
Glas, die ihrer besonderen Bedeutung wegen schon jetzt vorgelegt werden, da die
Verdffentlichung des ganzen Fundkomplexes spater erfolgen soli.
Miinzen und andere Funde in den Grabern datieren die Bestattungen des Tymbos
in die Zeit zwischen 220 und 182 v. Chr. Diese Datierung ist besonders wichtig
fur die Gattungen der Glasgefasse, die die drei Skyphoi unseres Grabhiigels vertreten.
Die erwahnten Skyphoi, die von glanzender Erhaltung sind, wurden in verschiedenen
Grabern des Tymbos gefunden. Es handelt sich um hervorragende Schopfungen
der Glaskunst, die im Museum von Pylos ausgestellt sind.
Der Skyphos Nr. 1 aus Grab 2 ist tief konisch mit triib olivgriiner Farbe der
Glasmasse. (Beil. Taf. Γα).
Der Skyphos Nr. 2 aus Grab 5 hat einen halbkugeligen Gefasskorper und ist
mit dicht gestreiften langlichen Blattern geschmuckt. Eine sechsblattrige Rosette
befindet sich im Zentrum des Bodens. Das Glas hat die Farbe und Transparenz
von Honig. (Beil. Taf. Γβ und Δ).
Der Skyphos Nr. 3 aus Grab 1 ist zweifellos der bedeutendste Fund aus dem
Grabhugel Tsopani Rachi. Es handelt sich um einen wunderbaren Millefioriskyphos,
der fur ein griechisches Museum bis jetzt ein einmaliger Besitz ist. Der Skyphos hat
eine vollendete halbkugelige Form. Die Grundfarbe der Glasmasse ist violett, nimmt
aber eine griinliche Nuance durch die spiralartigen Gebilde an, die in die Masse
eingelegt sind und sowohl die Aussen-wie Innenflache des Skyphos schmucken.
Manche Glasmosaiksteinchen sind an der Oberflache des Gefasses verstreut. (Taf.
66α, β und Beil. Taf. Εα, β und S' a, β). Dieser Skyphos lasst sich mit dem Millefioriskyphos
des Metropolitan Museum in New York vergleichen. (Taf. 67α, β).
Der Fund dieses Millefioriskyphos in einem datierten griechischen Grab um
200 v. Chr. erlaubt eine Neubestimmung der bisher vorgeschlagenen Datierung und
lasst einen friiheren Anfang der Herstellung solcher Gefasse annehmen.
