This work presents a methodology that correlates the supply current of a smart device to its functional characteristics in order to detect a manufacturing or a security anomaly in IoT devices. It is proven that awareness of the typical operation of a smart device via functional parameters (like the supply current), may offer valuable security indicators since any deviation from normal operational boundaries may be indicative of a security compromise or a functional anomaly. The paper offers the results from two experiments that prove this assumption and contribute towards an holistic security approach for the era of the Internet of Things (IoT). © 2018 IEEE.en
