Environmental Noise - especially from road transportation - is widely accepted as an end-point of environmental noise that can be taken as a basis for evaluating the impact of noise on the exposed population. Furthermore the health impacts of environmental noise are a growing concern among both the general public and policy-makers in Europe. Attica Tollway (or Attiki Odos), a modem motorway with two separate directional carriageways (3 lanes and an emergency lane -hard shoulder- each), extends along 65 km, consisting the Athens Ring motorway. Good skid resistance of the urban road network pavement surface is of essence for road safety. Loss of skid resistance can have dramatic consequences as for material and life loss. The problem is aggravated further in the presence of water, due to the phenomenon of hydroplaning. A series of field measurements of pavement surface noise, in Athens Ring Motorway as per the International Standard ISO 13472-1 under the general title: Acoustics -Measurement of sound absorption properties of road surfaces in situ: - Part 1: Extended surface method. The Adrienne method, ensuring in situ measurement for road surfaces with the use of 1 channel microphone, single loudspeaker and MLS signal was implemented in 3 distinct locations, were more than 35 recording samples were taken in order to analyze the absorption coefficient in the range of 200 to 5KHz. In all cases the late night measurement period selected, along with the absence of reflecting objects, the safety measures undertaken by the competent tollway's technical personnel, has ensured the accuracy of the measurements. In this article the relevant campaign results, shows that the existing porosity & the introduction of polymer material in the upper layer of the asphalt, ensure rather significant absorption capabilities especially in lower & higher frequencies with the exception of the range of 630 to 2K where absorption is minimal or practically nonexistent.en
