Joint quantizer optimization for scalable coding

Abstract
Scalability is an attractive solution to the problems posed by modern multimedia transmission systems. The key for better performance in scalable coding is joint rate distortion optimization. We present a new stochastic model for scalable coding which models the dependencies among layers, and we derive an optimal joint quantizer selection scheme for memoryless Gaussian sources. Simulation results verify the validity of the theoretical analysis. © 2010 IEEE.
