dc.description.abstract | A fragment from the sculptured frieze of Erechtheum (Acr. Mus. Inv. no 8589) has
been recognized among other sculptures removed from a byzantine church at the North
slope of Acropolis. It represents a group of a seated woman with a little girl leaning
against her. The fragment belongs to the North Portico of Erechtheum and if the
connection with the description of one of the building inscriptions of the temple
(Inscr. XVII, I, 20) is correct this fragment must be attributed to a sculptor named Iasos
of Kollytos. Its style is near to that of some other figures of the frieze (No 1075 and
1238). Some details of the drapery remind the so called Kallimachos style.
Since the whole question of the restoration and interpretation of the Erechtheum
frieze has yet not been settled, the identification of our group can be considered tentative. | en |
