Re-imagining the museum through "touch": Reflections of individuals with visual disability on their experience of museum-visiting in Greece

The research aim of the present study was to investigate theexperiences of individuals with visual disability regarding theirvisits to museums. To obtain relevant information, semi-structuredinterviews were conducted with 30 Greek individuals with visualdisability aged between 19-59 years. The participants highlightedissues relevant to factors which facilitated or/and hindered theiraccessibility to Greek museums, such as escorts, museum tourguides, tactile access, prohibition signs "do not touch", museumservices and museum websites. Also, they referred to positive andnegative emotions which were associated with their museum visits.Finally, they made suggestions aiming to improve the participationof people with visual disability to museums. © 2015 Published by Elsevier Masson SAS on behalf ofAssociation ALTER.
