Lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) may have a multifactorial aetiology, and clinical assessment of men with LUTS should aim to exclude other conditions that cause LUTS and diagnose benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and to define the clinical profile of patient with LUTS due to BPH in order to provide the best care. The diagnostic investigational tests are presented, and their indications are analyzed according to the best evidence. Real-life data on the clinical assessment of LUTS/BPH indicate a discrepancy among European countries, and plausible reasons are discussed. © 2014 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
