Abstract
INTRODUCTION: Stroke patients’ experiences affect significantly their clinical outcome. AIM: Translation and transcultural adaptation of the NHS-Stroke Questionnaire for investigating the experiences of stroke patients, in Greek. METHODS: The backward translation method was implemented. A pilot study was conducted to estimate face validity of the questionnaire in order to complete the appropriate translation and transcultural adaptation of the questionnaire in a Greek population. The pilot study population included 30 stroke patients in two public hospitals in Athens (11 patients) and three public hospitals in rest of Greece (19 patients). RESULTS: Certain questions that are not in consistency with Greek reality were excluded. Also, some questions with similar content were merged in order to simplify the questionnaire. In that case, the questionnaire became easier for the interview via telephone. Grammatical and syntax corrections in some questions were applied in order to be more comprehensible for the patients. The final decision for the changes in the questionnaire was taken in collaboration with the Picker Institute that developed it for the National Health Service of Great Britain. CONCLUSIONS: Assessment of stroke patients’ experiences is necessary for the improvement of healthcare and better management of the disease. Questionnaires such as the NHS-Stroke Questionnaire could assist in that direction creating the appropriate assumptions for the reliable and the valid assessment of patients’ experiences. © 2021, Society of Nursing Studies.
