Peripheral artery disease (PAD) is characterized by increased cardiovascular (CV) risk, limb morbidity and all-cause mortality. According to the current guidelines (2016) of the American Heart Association/American College of Cardiology on the management of PAD patients, statin therapy is recommended for PAD patients in order to treat dyslipidemia and reduce CV risk. The present narrative review discusses the use of statins and other lipid-lowering drugs such as ezetimibe, fibrates, niacin, anacetrapib and proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 9 (PCSK9) inhibitors in PAD patients in terms of both CV and limb outcomes. The clinical implications of hypolipidemic drug therapy in special patient populations including those with metabolic syndrome, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, chronic kidney disease and type 2 diabetes mellitus, which may frequently co-exist with PAD, are also considered. © 2018 Elsevier Ltd

Investigating Molecular Determinants of Cancer Cell Resistance to Ionizing Radiation Through an Integrative Bioinformatics Approach
Toy H.I., Karakülah G., Kontou P.I., Alotaibi H., Georgakilas A.G., Pavlopoulou A. (2021)Eradication of cancer cells through exposure to high doses of ionizing radiation (IR) is a widely used therapeutic strategy in the clinical setting. However, in many cases, cancer cells can develop remarkable resistance ... -
Preconditioning of primary human renal proximal tubular epithelial cells without tryptophan increases survival under hypoxia by inducing autophagy
Eleftheriadis T., Pissas G., Sounidaki M., Antoniadis N., Antoniadi G., Liakopoulos V., Stefanidis I. (2017)Purpose: Hypoxia plays a significant role in the pathogenesis of acute kidney injury (AKI). Autophagy protects from AKI. Amino acid deprivation induces autophagy. The effect of l-tryptophan depletion on survival and autophagy ... -
The role of indoleamine 2,3-dioxygenase in renal tubular epithelial cells senescence under anoxia or reoxygenation
Eleftheriadis T., Pissas G., Filippidis G., Liakopoulos V., Stefanidis I. (2021)Ischemia-reperfusion injury is the commonest form of acute kidney injury (AKI). Tubular epithelial cell senescence contributes to incomplete recovery from AKI and predisposes to subsequent chronic kidney disease. In cultures ...
