Science Education in Greece

Abstract

Science education is vital to promote scientific thinking, knowledge, and skills with the aim to prepare students participate actively in the today’s complex scientific and technological society. This study aims to examine the current situation of science education in Greece. Greece support many separate initiatives for the development of science education, but there is a lack of an overall strategy to improve science education. The performance of the Greek students in all PISA cycles was below the OECD average. To this extent, further changes are required especially in science education curricula, in teaching approaches and in teachers’ professional development to fully equip and engage Greek students to scientific thinking and learning. © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.
