Sustainability Challenges of Mobility in Areas of Natural, Historical and Man-Made Beauty

Abstract

The continuously increasing proportion of people living in urban areas, the concerns for pollution, congestion and road crashes in cities and the newly technological advances have attracted the interest of researchers and policy makers for urban transport. Passenger and freight transport have been acknowledged as a significant disturbance to the livability and quality of urban and suburban spaces, especially near to areas of man-made, historical and natural beauty value that must be preserved and at the same time be accessible, attractive and enjoyable to citizens and tourists. Towards this direction, this paper discusses the main evidence emerging from a systematic literature review on the challenges, opportunities and barriers of mobility for areas of outstanding beauty towards sustainability. The purpose is to provide a set of policy and practical recommendations and highlight the necessity for further specific analyses. © 2021, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.
