Use of wetlands for water pollution control in Thessaloniki Region, Greece

Abstract

Herein, an inventory of the natural wetlands in Thessaloniki region is presented as well as the associated pollution problems. Also, the use of constructed wetlands as an economic and efficient wastewater treatment and/or disposal technique for small communities is proposed, with a special reference to a demonstration project in Thessaloniki region, which is partially funded by the EU.
